Mick tells me that his picture was taken when the group had come together in the Phoenix Park to practice for the Interdepartmental Soccer Competition note the rolled-up trouser legs.

The location is just across the Wellington Road from the Monument. So, how did we get on in the soccer competition? In a word - brutal! Eugene Lambert has confirmed that the photo was taken in the early '60 in Studio 3 while a recording of 'Murphy agus a Chairde' was being produced Eugene tells me that the photo is also in the Lambert's Museum in Monkstown Co. I first met Lona in the summer of , sitting at her drawing board in the design department situated in the ground floor room of Montrose House, this room was shared with Tim Harvey, Alan Pleass and Gerry O'Donavon who designed the autumn schedule of Programmes between them.

Leaving me assisting everybody. Lona a generous and kind person, introducing me to everyone we met en route, including the writer Frank Delaney in Miss Meehan's crowded canteen upstairs in the studio block. The television was separated from the living room, in a small sitting room upstairs, where we were inundated with plates of Bewley's cream cakes while we all watched the Late Late Show. Which would have brought her into familiar first name contact with many of the great actors of the time, to whom she had built a life long friendship with the likes of Hilton Edwards and Micheal Mac Liammm6ir, Siobhan McKenna, Cyril Cusack and Shelah Richards.

I now realise that unlike England , the theatrical fraternity in Ireland , was just one large family of friends. Lona was an extremely hard working and conscientious Designer, who paid great attention to historical accuracy and detail. Neither frightened of getting her hands dirty either when out on location. Being slim, fit and full of energy, she had style with her dark hair parted in the middle and tied back in a pony tail, smoking a cigarette on the end of a long black holder.

Wearing an elegant cream short riding coat from Callaghan's, showing me the latest very smart rubber riding boots that she was going to wear as outside broadcast protective clothing no less! The Riordans was the very popular farming drama series recorded under adverse conditions, for which the nation can be very proud.

Which Lona as Designer and Lelia Doolan as Producer, along with Wesley Burrows the writer, created the finest and most charming Outside Broadcast location based television agricultural drama series in the western world, and it was the first of its type. Subsequently they in turn created and made Emmerdale Farm.

With its clone, and not a cow in sight! Emmerdale where all the 24 interior settings are permanently set up in the largest TV studio in the world, and an exact copy of the exterior location village, has been built at vast expense into an enclosure of Harewood House estate.

Lona designed The Real Charlotte and the costumes on the Year of the French period drama productions with her good friend, now also deceased, Director Michael Garvey. She also designed the costumes for Strumpet City directed by Tony Barry. When I left RTE in , Lona gave me a parting present of a very grand leather bound Filofax diary to help me on my way as a freelance Designer in England.

I last talked to Lona on the phone two years ago. May she rest in peace.. Eurovision TV Sound Crew This weeks "memories" photo is the "Class of '63".. Were you There?? Bantry House Patricia Grennan has sent me this photo which she found recently, and thought it might be of interest to colleagues.

So Patricia set me thinking that there must be hundreds of photos of interest, taken by colleagues when working on programmes over the years. Lots are probably gathering dust in drawers , presses , attics etc. The Superann website would be a great place for them to see the light of day So I propose that over the next few months , if you E Mail me photos you think would be of interest to colleagues , I will put them up on the website titled " Staff Photos to Remember" Somehow judging by your interest in the current photos I think it will be very popular How many colleagues can you identify in the above photo??

To complete the set I asked Paddy Jennings to give me a valid agricultural reason to film in the last four counties to complete the set: Longford, Roscommon, Sligo and Fermanagh.

Right, he said, we'll do a programme on farm buildings, and compare the state aids in the Republic and the North. When we had finished the two-day shoot we retired to a hostelry to celebrate. A valuable lesson on perspective! Many thanks to colleague Aidan Keys for these photos.. This one from the Rose of Tralee. He ended up being in charge of catering for all three EU centres, Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg. He and his wife May who is from Cavan have now retired to the family home in a remote part of Normandy. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in style there last September which my wife and I were privileged to attend.

They remember well with affection all of the people in the picture and ask me frequently how is " such-and-such" and where is "so-and-so". They are at present sunning themselves in Lanzarotte.
