The coast is muddy near the city but improves as you go east. Then comes a "Costa Golf" of sand hills, ruined castles and pine woods; finally cliffs and craggy islets.
West Lothian in the 19th century had the world's first oil industry, based on shale oil, and was an ugly industrial then post-industrial mess; but it has some gems. All transport routes converge on Edinburgh. The Trains run from Southwest England and the Midlands via Sheffield, York and Newcastle these also stop at Dunbar , from Manchester airport and city, and frequently from Glasgow some stopping at Linlithgow and Stirling.
Trains from Inverness, Aberdeen and Dundee run to Edinburgh every couple of hours. Buses run to Edinburgh from London Victoria, Belfast, and frequently from Glasgow and the other major Scottish cities. They mostly bypass the other Lothian towns, so you may have to travel into central Edinburgh and journey out again. Take the bus for other routes, including South Queensferry where the trains rumble high above the village on the Forth Bridge.

Set across more than acres of forest and hills, Beecraigs Country Park is an ideal spot to stretch your legs and find some peace. Polkemmet Country Park offers beautiful woodland and riverside walks, golf and bowls.
You can even hire a barbeque to make the most of the elusive Scottish sunshine! North Berwick is a very pleasant seaside town in East Lothian, boasting great beaches and coastal scenery, and the Scottish Seabird Centre.
Penicuik in Midlothian is the gateway to both the attractions of its own county and to Edinburgh and the Borders. Pretty South Queensferry sits on the shore in the shadow of the Forth Bridges. We are delighted to be able to start welcoming back visitors and have had to make some temporary adjustments to our operations in order to do so safely.
